Captured by a giant! The BFG is no ordinary bone-crunching giant. When Sophie hears that the giants are flush-bunking off to England to swollomp several nice little chiddlers, she decides she must stop them once and for all. He is far too nice and jumbly. It's lucky for Sophie that he is. And the BFG is going to support her! Had she been carried off in the middle making use of the night by the Bloodbottler, or any of the other giants— as opposed to the BFG— she would have soon turn into breakfast.

Evidently not even Roald Dahl could resist the acronym craze utilizing the early eighties. Bellowing ferret-faced golfer? Backstabbing fairy godmother? What sort of way is that for a G to behave? After all, he eats only disgusting snozzcumbers, and while the other Gs are snacking on little boys and girls, he's blowing happy dreams in by way of their windows. This BFG doesn't seem all that F at first as he creeps down a London street, snatches little Sophie out of her bed, and bounds away with her to giant land. Oh, oh. Big Friendly Giant! BFG? And he's not really all that B when compared with his evil, carnivorous brethren, who bully him for becoming such an oddball runt.

The BFG is 1 of Dahl's most lovable character creations. (Ages 9 to 12) Whether galloping off with Sophie nestled in to the soft skin of his ear to capture dreams as though they had been exotic butterflies; speaking his delightful, jumbled, squib-fangled patois; or whizzpopping for the Queen, he leaves an indelible impression of bigheartedness.
